Although this was great read I was....& I really can't believe I'm saying this...a tad disappointed with this book (what??!!). There's no doubt it was an excellent, gripping tale (as ever), & although Jack & Flea featured a little less than usual at least Flea's problem is getting resolved- well, out in the open with Jack if nothing else! AJ was a likeable character & he had a good storyline. So why the disappointment? Well, when the book was first published I kept seeing the tagline Is this the scariest book ever? so after "The Treatment" & "Birdman" expectations were high...& while it was certainly creepy & spooky it didn't give me the shivers (or gross me out!!) as I was expecting/hoping. That aside it's still a cut above so many crime novels & I still highly recommend it :o)

I know what you mean, Plumster: Ms Slaughter describes it as "terrifying" yet it isn't: it IS superbly written, and flawless (as ever from Mo Hayder) in its continuity: it is a good story, and AJ is a likeable chap who deserves to be happy. I feel it is more a typical "whodunnit" than a thriller.
I'm glad the Flea and Caffrey situation has come to a close - it's about time it did; but there is no mention of the Walking Man (Caffrey's mate) which I expected.
Mo Hayder remains a superb author, and I will look out for her new ones . . . I just need to remember that she ISN'T as scary as she used to be!
Thank you P-c: loved it.
p.s. I also "got it" fairly early on!
