Journal Entry 1 by sarahmangan from Nottingham, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom on Sunday, April 6, 2014
A replacement copy of this book for the 2013 favourites roundabout, after my first one went AWOL.

This moving and funny book is set in small town Ireland in the aftermath of the credit crunch. It reflects how this global issue affects a whole community. Its chapters are from the point of view of different characters. Ryan creates distinctive voices that are very human - in their thoughts, failings and redeeming qualities. It is also quite skilful the way he uses this technique of changing narrators to develop and change the narrative. A great book in my opinion, although some people who I know who have read it have really struggled with the dialect. It will be interesting to hear your opinions on it. I hope you like this book as much as I do. Even if you don't I hope you will be interested on its style and uniqueness.

Sorry, I totally forgot to journal it when I received this book.

I've finished it now and I must say I was very impressed. I can't quite put my finger on it, but the writing style is very beautiful and unique. What a wonderful book!

I liked how the story was gradually revealed from the different perspectives and in the different voices. Really enjoyed this and would otherwise probably otherwise not have come across it. Good choice for the roundabout, thanks for sharing sarahmangan!

It took me a while to get into the book. Maybe because I had to get used to the Irish English? But once I got used to the language, I really enjoyed the book. The narration with the voices of the different people really makes this a very different book. Sad story though!

I just got back from my holidays and this one was waiting for me. I try to be quick :)

22.08:
Although this is a tapestry of different voices, different perspectives and angles, this is not only a collection of different experiences, but a narration. Sometimes bleak and sad, sometimes funny and emotional each character expresses his or her part of the story in a unique voice, even with unique dialectal traits. I was surprised by what seemed a loosely woven plot in the beginning and enjoyed the story wholeheartedly. The local construction company going out of business and its owner fleeing the country without paying his employees is just the tip of a spiral ultimately leading to one kid's kidnapping and a man's death. Though reading it one time might not let one fully grasp all the connections between all characters completely, this book provided a very good and often speculative experience.

Received today! I have one other book from this roundabout to finish before this one

Journal Entry 11 by Lamilla at Мінск / Minsk, Minsk Belarus on Saturday, September 6, 2014
The book has mixed reviews on goodreads; they are diverse enough for you to wish to read the book and form your own opinion. I started it yesterday.

The book is heavy on dialect which surprisingly gives it additional charm.

It's a very slim book, you could read it in one go if you like, but it took me a while to go through the story. Almost every time the perspective change you want to stop and revisit the characters from previous chapters.

I liked the plural perspective and the way the story unraveled one piece at a time. It sure was an interesting choice, thanks for sharing!

I actually finished this in 2014! It was quite a fast read for me. I found the narration technique excellent, with the shifts from person to person and the unfolding of the plot, even though I had to look back now and again to check the names. I might have missed quite a few things because of the language -but I don't mind. I also have to say that for once I really sympathized with the dark atmosphere, the feelings of bitterness and disappointment due to the economic depression, because, let's face it, this all was too real and familiar for someone living here in Greece. And just another reason why the humanity expressed in some voices is so appreciated.

This was probably my favorite choice of the roundabout this year. Thanks a lot for sharing sarahmangan, I wish all the best for 2015 to all readers!

A very good choice for the roundabout. Needed to go some chapters back to comprehend who is who.
An interesting study of the rural way of thinking, I think it's the same everywhere.
Seems that Ireland as a nation is now out of the crash thanks to the special corporate taxes but the youth unemployment is still very high.

Arrived today and as this is neither of the books I was expecting, bookrings are going to do what they are best at and arrived all at the same time!

Journal Entry 22 by wingearthcaroleannewing at Falkirk, Scotland United Kingdom on Saturday, March 21, 2015
Sorry for having this for so long but feeling too ill to read with a bookring backlog isn't good, however I think I'm last in this roundabout which makes it a bit better. I've also had it for so long because I just couldn't get into it - it just didn't grip me and I don't think it was the language. Although can anyone explain what "he looked at me through his mouth" is meant to mean. I spent most of the time trying to work out who on earth this next character was and how they were linked to the story and perhaps this contributed to my feeling that nothing really happened. I did not find the book either dramatic or engaging.

This did remind me of my holiday to Dublin for the convention though. On every tour I did what was being pointed out was the number of empty buildings from companies gone bust or left the city. Plus a newly built hotel which never opened left sitting there waiting for guests. We also drove passed a couple of the ghost estates mentioned. They seemed scary enough empty so I can't imagine being the only person living there.

This was a really good, quick read - mostly rather sad and bitter though. I loved all the changes of perspective, the many distinct voices - what a brilliant structure.
Recommendable!
