I was in the mood for something rather light and maybe a little silly, so I picked this book to read for the non-fiction sweepstakes. And it turned out to be a fun and light read, too.
I am not sure how I'd have felt about it if it hadn't been a BookCrossing present, but if I'd have spotted it at the bookstore and paid the 10 quid the cover says this originally was, because there really is very little information in this book that anybody interested in the subject couldn't glean by doing half a day's research on Wikipedia. While Bite certainly is a pleasant introdction to vampires (and vampire movies, especially), it reads a lot like a term paper in something like media studies, and anybody who enjoys vampire movies and has read one or two other (non-fiction) books on the subject is bound to already know most of what is presented here. Added annoyances for me were numerous lists which add little information but bulk up the page count, ridiculous maps rendered totally useless by huge superimposed symbols (making the Eiffel tower stretch from the Orkneys to Northern Spain, and Transylvania covering the Baltic Sea), and the author's unique talent to misspell every other proper name (Max Schreck, Gerard Butler, Stephenie Meyer, ...).
Having said that, I did enjoy reading Bite. I had a great time revisiting some of my favourite books and movies, and it is always fun to read about something that the author shows a lot of enthusiams for -- and Jackson clearly is passionate about Vampire books and films (even if I can't say I share his appreciation of Anno Dracula -- and how could he miss Christopher Moore?).
Also, I think this makes pretty much the ideal BookCrossing book, because it is a quick and easy read that one can well enjoy even if it is outside one's usual reading preferences, and being a sturdy hardcover, I hope that Bite has a long way and many happy readers ahead of it yet. :)

Journal Entry 7 by lils74 at Kathmandu, Bagmati (incl. Kathmandu Valley) Nepal on Monday, August 22, 2016
This book arrived safely in Kathmandu today -- thank you so much, linguistkris! I still can't believe I won; it's been fascinating seeing the wide variety of topics the non-fiction books that I've been sent are on. And thank you thank you thank you for the chocolates and Haribo jellies that you sent. I love Haribo and hadn't seen those cute baby packets before. Yum!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I really wanted to enjoy this book more than I did, if I'm honest. I often like compendiums of interestingness, but this one didn't really do it for me very much, and I was unable to really get into it or stick with it, so I have decided to send it travelling to the winner of the second round of the Non-Fiction Sweeps because I agree with linguistkris that the nature of it makes it an ideal Bookcrossing book. Hopefully it is enjoyed and travels far!

Release #4 for the 2017 KTM Challenge.
This seems like an easy and quite funny read! It's always good to have some light read books at hand :)
Well, it was interesting to read about the vampire myths in various countries. But then I continued reading and came approximately to page 40 and suddenly was pretty bored. After having a quick look at the rest of the book, it seems like there's more boring stuff there. So although I find vampires interesting, this book wasn't my cup of tea.
For the European wishlist tag.
