I treated myself to a parcel of better world books, and this was one that I found when I raided their bargain bin for ghosts. :)

Wow, this was great! One can really tell that Vernon is a passionate and professional storyteller; this is way above average as collections of local ghost stories go. True, I wasn't particularly crazy about the frame story, but I like how Vernon adds personal touches here and there and breaks the fourth wall.
I think the book might have done with a tiny bit more proof-reading, as I spotted a few typos, and while I generally like the idea of the chapter-initial illustrations, the fact that some of them are so pixellated, and, worse still, badly distorted, gives this book a much cheaper feel than it deserves.
The stories themselves are quite varied, and feel very authentic (as opposed to the clearly made-up stories one sometimes hears at mediocre ghost walks -- talking of which: I wish ghost walks had been a thing back when I lived in Nova Scotia, and I'm convinced Halifax makes a wonderful backdrop to ghost stories!); there are old-worldly supernatural beings like selkies, black dogs and devils as well as plenty of restless souls and the unhappy dead. The ones I most enjoyed were probably the ones from Cape North, Sable Island (b) and Mushaboom, ironically all places I've never visited. The story of the Young Teazer didn't particularly strike me as great, but it did mention my one-time-home of Chester, and top marks for that!

Reserving for a planned ghost stories bookbox.
I've added Vernon's other collections to my wishlist and hope I'll get to read more by him some time.
