Thanks a lot. I developed an appreciation for Maeve Binchy a couple of years ago, and I enjoy the chance to read more of her books.
The story features a complicated weave of characters, seemingly unrelated at first, but all brought together in one form or another by an evening Italian class.
It begins with a middle-aged teacher who has effectively lost everything he ever wanted: the respect of his family, the love of his wife, and the promise of becoming a principal.
Signora is a quiet woman who left Ireland 26 years ago to follow the man she loved to Italy. When he is gone, she comes back to Ireland, to find another simple life, but without love. Or so she thinks. She ends up teaching the Italian class, and enriching the lives of everyone she meets. People take her as simple, but she is just uncomplicated and private. She can see through to most people's problems.
As always, I find Binchy's books to be hard to put down as a nice, light read.
Things wrapped up a little too neatly in the end, but that's OK.
