"In Hidden Moon, Inspector O returns from a mission abroad to find his new police commander waiting at his office door. There has been a bank robbery---the first ever in Pyongyang---and the commander demands action, and quickly. But is this urgency for real? Somewhere, someone in the North Korean leadership doesn’t want Inspector O to complete his investigation. And why not? What if the robbery leads to the highest levels of the regime? What if power, not a need for cash, is the real reason behind the heist at the Gold Star Bank?
Given a choice, this isn’t a trail a detective in the Pyongyang police would want to follow all the way to the end, even a trail marked with monogrammed silk stockings. “I’m not sure I know where the bank is,” is O’s laconic observation as the warning bells go off in his head. A Scottish policeman sent to provide security for a visiting British official, a sultry Kazakh bank manager, and a mournful fellow detective all combine to put O in the middle of a spiderweb of conspiracies that becomes more tangled, and dangerous, the more he pulls on the threads.
Once again, as he did in A Corpse in the Koryo, James Church opens a window onto a society where nothing is quite as it seems. The story serves as the reader’s flashlight, illuminating a place that outsiders imagine is always dark and too far away to know. Church’s descriptions of the country and its people are spare and starkly beautiful; the dialogue is lean, every thought weighed and measured before it is spoken. Not a word is wasted, because in this place no one can afford to be misunderstood. "

Just fantastic and beautiful. I love the bizarre atmosphere and the observations and all the bizarreness in this. Inspector O definitely makes me curious for more...

Safe journey little book - I hope you'll make many new friends on your travels!

"Don't ever apologize to an author for buying something in paperback, or taking it out from a library (that's what they're there for. Use your library). Don't apologize to this author for buying books second hand, or getting them from bookcrossing or borrowing a friend's copy. What's important to me is that people read the books and enjoy them, and that, at some point in there, the book was bought by someone. And that people who like things, tell other people. The most important thing is that people read... "

Well, this was quite a slow read. Somehow the bizarre atmosphere was fashinating. At the same time it was suffocating or oppressive. I felt living in the conditions where the spoken words were less meaningful than the way the words were pronounced and the gestures surrounding the words. I could not read more than 20 pages at a time. It was too depressing but fashinating... Anyway this was a new world for me - a world I would not like to visit in reality.

This was a fascinating story, not because of the plot but because of everything else. North Korean life, the way people express themselves, all the secrets behind secrets. Wow!
Thank you aetm!

This book was interesting but slow to read. More than once I felt quite frustrated on behalf of Inspector O and had to put the book down. It can't be easy to solve crimes when you don't know what you are supposed to solve and what not. I was a bit disappointed in the end of the book, I expected more of a closure but maybe the story continues in the next book...

This was a slow read indeed... the most interesting part was (obviously) North Korea, but the plot itself left me completely cold. I finished it but am still not sure who was who in the end - but that's what you get from taking a couple of weeks to read through a detective novel I guess!

Picked this up from the Airport on my way to the British Isles and Ireland. Not really my cup of tea, but I'll give it a lift to the big wide world (oops, it came from Texas, it has seen some miles already).
Funnily enough I left a book about an escape from a prison camp of North Korea into the lounge and it was picked and journalled by an AF before I got to the gate!
I'll probably release this in Scotland as it has a Scottish inspector.
