Goodnight Mister TomGoodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian

This is one of those wonderful tales about a small gang of children living lives of freedom and adventure that used to make me long to live in a village and take part in amateur dramatics, sing in the church choir and take part in village life to the full. It strongly reminds me of Noel Streatfeild's tales of putting on village pageants and brings back memories of reading Enid Blyton, Swallows and Amazons, Five Children and It and the like. It even reminds me of the Little House on the Prairie books where the family is forced to make do and mend.

Of course, this book is set at the beginning of WWII when children were first evacuated to the countryside from the city and billeted with often unprepared strangers. One of the strengths of Goodnight Mister Tom is the description of how difficult that was. It soon becomes clear that the boy, Willie, came from a home where his mother didn’t spare the rod; she is a religious fundamentalist who seems to irrationally believe that many things are inherently sinful and fun is one of those things. The gentle way in which Tom tirelessly helps Willie to build his confidence and the healing power of love and friendship make this book truly heartwarming.
