I came across this battered ex-library softcover at the Used Book Superstore in Burlington MA. (I've taped it up and it should be good for another read or two, but may not last much longer.)

I've seen the anime adaptation and enjoyed it, and have read several volumes of the manga, but it'll be nice to start at the beginning!

Later: Great fun to see the early days of Watanuki, Yuuko, and company - though also rather poignant, given what they all have to go through later in the series. The art-style isn't fully developed either, getting much more ornate as the series progresses - but even here it includes some really stunning images.

The premise: high-school student Watanuki is something of a loner, and is plagued by visions of terrifying creatures. He stumbles into a beautiful house belonging to the lovely and very, very odd Yuuko, who specializes in granting wishes - for a price. She manipulates Watanuki into becoming a permanent employee, at least until such time as she feels he's done enough work to compensate for making the spirit-beings stop following him. [Hint: it's going to be a looooong wait.] But in the meantime much fun is had by everyone except Watanuki, whose prickly temper and insecurities make it hard for him to unwind.

This volume includes a couple of Yuuko's wish-granting cases, which Watanuki gets caught up in, and also introduces Watanuki's schoolmates Himawari (on whom he has a huge crush) and Domeki (whom he hates with an unreasoning passion, in part because Domeki's always so calm).

Some of the clients' stories turn out to have grim resolutions, though that is due to the clients' choices. One of the stories features a woman who's addicted to the internet, certainly a timely issue.

There's extra material in the form of translation notes and reference tidbits.

[The TV Tropes page for this series explains a few things, including the various crossovers with other CLAMP works - primarily Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, though this volume also has a brief appearance by two characters from Legal Drug and a reference to a character who must be Subaru from Tokyo Babylon.]
