This was one of the books I inherited when my Dad passed away 13 years ago. I've never read it, but now that I saw it on Heaven-Ali's wishlist I decided to have a go. Will take it along to Birmingham meet-up, I'll probably have enough time to finish it before. Appears to be rather entertaining.
Mentions the High Street of Eton, but fails to say it is the ONLY street in Eton. Went to see Eton a year ago. It is a school everybody knows, but I had had no idea where Eton actually was. Thought it might be a city similar to Oxford or Cambridge. Little did I know that you only cross a small bridge from the railway station of Windsor and you are on the Eton mainstreet (and only street). Walk that to the other end and you are on the school yard. That was the closest to higher education I'm ever likely to get.

I had this as a travel read and I'm enjoying it immensely. A cross between P.G.Wodehouse and Oscar Wilde, with a hint of Evelyn Waugh thrown in. I hope I'll have time to finish this before it's time to say goodbye.

Phew, finished the book this morning. Ms Mitford has a new fan. Her language is easier than that of Wodehouse. Whenever I read good old P.G. I really have to concentrate not to miss his puns which keep coming from left, right and centre. Yet the plot was very Woosterian.
Imagine that already in 1932 they knew that the fluke starts as a little worm inside a sheeps liver. It matures, marries an have an innumerable amount of children who move to live in the water snail's liver, where they in turn it mature, marry and have an innumerable amount of children. It's time to move again, to the lungs of the water snail, mature, marry and multiply. Three weddings and no funerals. From there it goes to sit on a grass leaf and waits for a sheep to come along again.
The joke about fluke and mouth and me being here for Cruft's brought to mind the time I was supposed to come to Cruft's for the first time. My ex-boss was working for Orion Animal Health pharmaceutical company and had persuaded her bosses that it would be a great idea to take some of their best clients from small animal practices to Cruft's. We were supposed to pay part of the trip ourselves , but could have gotten a decent group discount and free tickets to Cruft's. All was set and then came the really bad outburst of foot & mouth and lo and behold - Cruft's was cancelled!!! I did feel for the British farmers, but what about MY first ever trip to Cruft's?? Talk about bad timing; the law about how much pharmaceutical companies can host vets (..nurses and docs) changed and next year it wasn't possible to do the trip. Have to look up what year that was, at the end of 90'ies I'd say.

Released 10 yrs ago (3/8/2014 UTC) at Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I must be getting old, I skipped a day at Cruft's to meet Birmingham bookcrossers! Had a lovely time, was taken to see the new library (loved the old Shakespearean room at the top but not the 136 steps) and a beautiful Waterstone's shop in an old bank.
Enjoy the book, Heaven-Ali. I did, too.
