This book is perhaps the first novel by an Australian Aboriginal women. It is closely based on the author's experiences growing up as a part-Aboriginal in the New South Wales white community. She experienced life with both repressive and kindly white people, and in various child welfare homes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Knowing that this novel is based on a true story makes it even more touching. Monica Clare describes a life that a lot of children of her generation were forced to live, torn between their black and white roots. Her style is simple and straightforward, which fits perfectly with the story she tells. If you are interested in the fate of the so called "stolen generation", this is the book to read.

Arrived today in Wuppertal, thank you very much :)!
I love the warm-hearted way Monica Clare tells the story of her life, the easy way she lets the reader partake in it.
The efforts some humans untertake to make this world a worse place are unbelievable. But Monica has also met great people with a big heart and in this book she portrays them with gratefulness.
Thank you very much for sharing this book, it was a pleasure to read!

A short read and I agree with Columbina. I also had some problems with the language. But I think it's slang or something like that.

What a surprise! Thank you very much for this book!
-------------------------------------------------
The book "Karobran" is apparently the first book, which was written by an Aborigine and therefore is of great importance. It tells the story of the young Isabel, who grows up with her brother Morris and their father, a migrant worker. The mother, a white woman, died in childbirth. Because their life situation is precarious, the children come to a home, and later to an elderly couple where they find a good childhood. But when Isabel is old enough, both are brought back into the home and separated. Now Isabel has to take up working relationships in which she sometimes finds goodness, but also worst discrimination.
Isabel herself is a modest, friendly, hard-working girl. The only alleged flaw is the skin color.
At the end of the book she joins the workers´ movement.
Thus, the book tells the story of an Aboriginal perspective and is therefore plausible. It is simply written and read quickly with not even 100 pages.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
In the OBCZ of Oslo´s Main Station.
I found this book in the bookcase at the OBCZ-Oslo S when we were having our monthly BC meeting this afternoon. Looks interesting, so I took it home.
An easy read. The story may have been shocking in 1973, but not today when the sufferings of the Abroriginals are well known. Still: Well done, Monica Clare!
