When Charlie Flint is sent a mysterious package of cuttings about a brutal murder, it instantly grabs her attention. The murder occurred in the grounds of her old Oxford college - a groom battered to death just hours after his wedding. As his bride and wedding guests sipped champagne, his alleged killers where slipping his bloodstained body into the river. Charlie doesn't know who sent the package, or why, yet she can't get the crime out of her head. But as she delves deeper, and steps back into the mysterious world of Oxford colleges, she realises that there is much more to this crime than meets the eye ...

I do love Val McDermid and I think she's succeeded with this one too. I was a page turner and it only took me a couple of days to read it. It is full of complex relationships - family, friends, lovers with compelling backstories. The mystery keeps you guessing and changing your mind but with some rather late breaking twists. I kept thinking there wasn't enough book left to finish everything off. I especially enjoyed the excerpts from Jay's second memoir, paired with her manipulative musings.

I didn’t realise this story was set in Oxford when I started it and as next year’s convention is to be held there I think that is the best place for releasing.
