FROM AMAZON:
If J.J. Abrams, Margaret Atwood, and Alan Weisman collaborated on a novel . . . it might be this awesome.

Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.
This is the twelfth expedition.
Their group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain and collect specimens; to record all their observations, scientific and otherwise, of their surroundings and of one another; and, above all, to avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.
They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers—they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding—but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them, and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another, that change everything.
Annihilation is the first volume in Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, which will be published throughout 2014: volume two (Authority) in June, and volume three (Acceptance) in September.

I loved this! This novel is under 200 pages but I read it slowly so I wouldn't miss even one detail. Reading this was like being in a dream, with mysteries and the unexpected happening on every page. There were so many thought provoking sentences that I wanted to highlight and come back to (but I didn't).

Recommended for people who like slightly bizarre, adventure fiction or who loved watching Lost.

I am looking forward to reading the second and third books in this trilogy.

This was quite a happy find. I was out for an excursion with my family - we like to get in our car and visit a new town as often as we can. This particular day was beautiful, and we decided to explore a new trail. Previously I had seen a trail that originated from the Piermont Train Station on my way to dinner in Piermont (a few months ago). So I decided to stop off and see if we could walk the trail. After parking by the train station, I got out of the car and started walking toward the trail when I saw this book lying on the bench. I had never heard of bookcrossing.com, so I figured someone must have left it there by accident. When I picked it up I realized that it was no accident, and was very excited about the whole idea (I love reading and traveling, so this checked two boxes on my list). Very cool! Thank you for releasing it! I look forward to reading it (after I finish the book I am currently reading - "The Bone Clocks" by David Mitchell). I will take good care of it, and will release it when I am done reading it! :)
