Third in the Thursday Next series. Thursday is pregnant and on the run so she hides out in an unpublished novel in the well of lost plots, whilst apprenticed to Miss Haversham as a Jurisfiction agent. The evil sister of Acheron Hades, who she killed, takes revenge by modifying her memories causing to forget her husband Landen, who has been eradicated from ever having existed. All BookWorld anticipates the introduction of the new UltraWord system which will revolutionarise reading. Fforde is clever and extremely funny.

Finished it! The book is an improvement over the previous volumes - for once I was eager to read and laugh from time to time. I was surprised that a certain plot line hasn't been resolved yet (two volumes - are you kidding me?). I'm eager to try Nursery Crime series, too.

I was certain that I had journalled this book, but apparently I didn't. And then I also dissappeared of the radar (which happens occassionally in my life.) My sincere apologies to everyone.

Journal Entry 10 by wingdutch-bookwing at Heerenveen , Fryslân (Friesland) Netherlands on Tuesday, October 14, 2014
Funny as always! I really liked it, and would have liked it even more without all the action. Such a fascinating world!
I will send book 3 and 4 in one go to bookguide, so first I'll finish book 4 before sending this one on.

My Goodreads rating: 4 of 5 stars

Jasper Fforde was back on form with 'The Well of Lost Plots' after the slightly disappointing Lost in a Good Book. In this book, there are plenty of sub-plots, action-packed sequences where Thursday Next squeaks through, unlike some of her accomplices and jokes aplenty.

The things I loved about The Eyre Affair are back. It's fun to spot the literary references, even though it's not essential to know which books they come from. There are also lots of the bookish in-jokes that make Jasper Fforde's books so appealing. I also love the way Fforde leaves no stone unturned in his mission to inject humour; if you're not reading the 'About the author' section, the 'Credits' at the end or you skip the adverts at the back, you're missing out.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is, you don't have to understand everything perfectly. After all, if Textual sieves can remain "fantastically useful and largely unexplained", then just sit back and enjoy the fun without worrying if you understood every single joke or reference.

By the end of the book, Thursday has to fight to stop the adoption of the UltraWord (TM) system. At first sight it sounds marvellous, integrating the advantages of Wikipedia, Amazon and e-readers for plot summaries (PlotPotPlus), ReadZip, PageGlow and 3 music tracks, allowing authors to create a multimedia experience. As Thursday gets to know more about the system, she realises that allowing anyone to publish is going to cause lowering of standards and have other unexpected effects in the book world. How true, how true. Not to mention the truly evil function that will make libraries extinct, not to mention secondhand bookshops, bookswaps and my beloved BookCrossing. In fact, the copy I read came as a BookCrossing ray, sending the whole series, book by book, round the world. Interestingly enough, several people have dropped out in the course of the ray as they just can't wait and have bought their own copies. So all that lending and swapping does lead to book purchases, after all, as people buy their favourite authors because they want to own a complete set or read the latest book without having to wait for it to be processed in a library or become randomly available in a book swap or secondhand bookshop or even on Amazon, etc.

I'm going to finish with a quotation about books:
"Books may look like nothing more than words on a page but they are actually an infinitely complex Imagino-Transference technology that translates odd inky squiggles into pictures inside your head. [...] After all, reading is arguably a far more creative and imaginative process than writing; when the reader creates emotion in their head, or the colours of the sky during the setting sun, or the smell of a warm summer's breeze on their face, they should reserve as much praise for themselves as they do for the writer - perhaps more." (pp.49 / 50)

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Due to a crazy work schedule, unexpected trips and ones that left earlier than expected, leaving me no time to visit our local part-time post office, I finally managed to get this in the post last week. My sincere apologies to everyone who I've inconvenienced, hanging on to these books for so long. There are now 4 books on their way to Lunatum.

This book has been released as part of the following BookCrossing challenges:
- The Ultimate Challenge - read and release books, with extra points for a monthly theme
- Reduce Mount TBR (To Be Read) - read and release books on the TBR list since before the end of 2014. My reading goal is 36 books.

Another lucky day for my mailbox :-) But why is it that bookrings always arrive so close together? I think this one will have to wait until I finish my Master's thesis in a few weeks. It's a nice motivation to help me get done, though... I'm really looking forward to read this!

Journal Entry 18 by wingFraukeRowing at Göteborg, Västergötland Sweden on Thursday, June 2, 2016
Done with my thesis work, what a perfect reward to read afterwards :-)

This book was just as awesome as the previous ones, a crazy story with quirky characters. I didn't realize so many people are involved in producing books, but I was happy to hear no unicorns were expressively written for this one :-D I loved the holesmith's work of saving the main character from an impossible situation with the help of a frozen plot-device, what a brilliant idea... The BOOK V8.3 worked very well, but there were a few minor bugs with the imagino transference in the jurisfiction meeting with the had had and that that discussions. I'll make sure to keep a dictionary at hand at all times, the myspeling vyrus is just scary! Oh, and also, I'll go check if my e-book reader smells like cantaloupes... ;-)

EDIT: Sorry for the delay, I will get the book sent on toward the end of August at the very latest...

Journal Entry 25 by bluezwuzl at Altdorf (Niederbayern), Bayern Germany on Monday, January 16, 2017
Interesting insights into the book-world as Thursday has to disappear from the "real" one and starts an apprenticeship in jurisfiction. But she also has to stand up against revengeful mnemonomorph Aornis and a reading-device that could have devastating impact on both worlds...

Caught this at Worldcon75. Wow, it has already travelled quite a lot! I've only read the first Thursday Next book and I want to read them in order, so this'll have to wait for a while.

I finally got around reading and finishing this.
You have to admire Jasper Fforde's imagination, there is so much in his books. In this book the big plot of the series wasn't advanced that much, but I enjoyed Thursday's diverse adventures in the Well of Lost Plots.
