Well written and moving.
Was made into a popular film by a young Steven Spielberg and helped to set Whoopi Goldberg on her way as an actor.

I caught the book at the airport on my way to visit Mum. I read it over my week-long holiday and released it in Cairns airport. I thought this was an exceptional book. Even though it's a gloomy old tale, there is still a streak of humour and optimism running through it.
