Book burble: Who Stole Lady Neeley's Bracelet?

Was it the fortune hunter, the gambler, the servant, or the rogue? All of London is abuzz with speculation, but it is clear that one of four couples is connected to the crime.

LADY WHISTLEDOWN'S SOCIETY PAPERS, MAY 1816

JULIA QUINN enchants: A dashing fortune hunter is captivated by the Season's most desired debutante...and must prove he is out to steal the lady's heart, not her dowry.

SUZANNE ENOCH tantalizes: An innocent miss who has spent her life scrupulously avoiding scandal is suddenly -- and secretly -- courted by London's most notorious rogue.

KAREN HAWKINS seduces: A roving viscount comes home to rekindle the passionate fires of his marriage...only to discover that his beautiful, headstrong bride will not be so easily won.

MIA RYAN delights: A lovely, free-spirited servant is dazzled by the romantic attentions of a charming earl...sparking a scandalous affair that could ruin them both.

You'll hear it first from LADY WHISTLEDOWN

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Delightful follow up THE FURTHER OBSERVATIONS OF LADY WHISTLEDOWN in this another glorious Regency-era collection of tales threaded together, as was that last, by social commenter Lady Whistledown. Whistledown’s is the sharp that eye catches all and shockingly relates it in her gossip column, making it the most read item in ton households over breakfast. The same authors as before contribute to this follow up.

To set the scene a dinner party goes awry as a ruby bracelet vanishes and the ensuing shenanigans find four couples encountering each other, some for the first time though one estranged couple re-establish the fiery passions that first brought them together. Each of the authors highlights the entanglements of a different couple as they wrangle their relationship toward recognition of love and the tales are neatly interwoven so dexterously that some of the same encounters, even down to the dialogue, are presented from different couple’s point of view. Creating an almost seamless overarching theme to this is a real trick to pull off but, for the most part, done here with verve.

Yes as ever the young women are all virgins while the men most patently are not but those irritating double standards aside this is entertaining escapism. Even slightly more as issues of the perils of innocent assumption, gross misunderstanding, wilful manipulation, honesty of intent and accession to the inevitable despite original plan, as well as the darker issues of pride, betrayal and the generous compassion of forgiveness are all aired making this a satisfying read. It would be easy to reach for more of these collections, highly recommended.
