Journal Entry 1 by Scrawler on Wednesday, January 07, 2004
"Ella Turner tries hard to fit into the small, close-knit community of the French town that she has moved to. She even changes her name back to Tournier, and knocks the rust off her high-school French. Isolated and loenly, she is drawn to investigate her Tournier ancestry, with heart-wrenching results. Isabelle du Moulin, known as La Rousse because of her fiery red hair, is tormented and shunned in her village - suspected of witchcraft ad reviled for her association with the Virgin Mary. When she becomes pregnant, she has no choice but to marry into the arrogant Tournier family. Tormentor becomes husband, and a shocking fate awaits her - as Ella Turner discovers four hundred years later." THE BOOK IS HERE! IT'S FINALLY HERE! No more worries Scrawler- the Virgin Blue, after taking its own sweet time, is finally here. I'm reading another book right now, but I've got a three day weekend (quarterbreaks are blessings) and things will be read.

Journal Entry 4 by Czersk from Roscoe, Minnesota USA on Tuesday, March 30, 2004
I hate it when I don't get a complete epilogue- I Want to know what happens! This seems to be a vicious, on-going cycle- find a good book, get really into it, and then it ends and you're not sure what happened. Maybe the ending was clear to others and I just read it too fast, or I'm dense- I'm not sure which- probably both- but the fact of the matter is that this was a great book with a lacking ending. I think that if i turned up for some odd, unexplainable reason in the world of Ella Tournier (which would really suck, since I am illiterate when it comes to French) I would have some major arse to kick. First of all, Rick for not being Jean-Paul. I know he cannot help it, but, well, he should! I think I may be biased since JP is a librarian- and all librarians rock, but that's just me. As for that SOB Etienne I'd do a little more than kicking. Probably a little head dunking in the river Tarn. That sounds good. Then his mother,(shiver) freaky lady. I like her the least. Why can't she talk? That's creepy. I just wish that they'd leave Isabelle alone. What's wrong with red hair and blue cloth? Nothing- they're just idiots. This is getting long, and I'm rambling again, so I'll stop. On to Weeblet!

i really liked and felt for isabelle and marie. not so much ella. i found her abrasive, shril, and slightly over excitable. i wondered what jean-paul was thinking! my disliking ella didn't really influence what i thought of the story, however- it got pretty exciting toward the end :) can't wait to read 'girl with a pearl earring'. thanks for sharing!

Journal Entry 7 by bronwen316 from Naperville, Illinois USA on Monday, May 03, 2004
5/2/04 - The book has arrived safe and sound. I'm in the middle of another book right now. This one is next on the list. 5/13/04 - I really didn't want this book to end! I agree that the ending left a lot to be desired. I guess we're supposed to draw our own conclusions about what happens. Overall, I really enjoyed the story. Off to NMarshall88 this week.

Journal Entry 9 by WarEagle78 from Hoover, Alabama USA on Wednesday, July 07, 2004
A lovely book and an interesting story. I was particularly taken with Ella and Isabelle's feelings of isolation, so different and so similar. The nightmare of the female family members passed down through the centuries was intriguing, but I never understood its connection with lovemaking. As usual when reading books from the Middle Ages, I am struck by the superstition, the bare cruelty of life, and the servant-owner mentality of a husband for his wife. Well worth reading. Will send on to Xana this weekend.

Journal Entry 12 by Xana from Bruxelles / Brussel, Bruxelles / Brussel Belgium on Wednesday, August 04, 2004
Finished it some minutes ago (it's late, should be sleeping!). It's not as good as "Girl with..." or (my favorite Chevalier so far) "The Lady and the Unicorn", but still enjoyable. Have the feeling that the story is very interesting, but she could have done better with it. Was this one of her first books? Did anyone get that sentence in the last page about the Tournier painter and the "red fish"? I get the feeling that it's a clue to something in the book, but I just can't put my finger on it...

Journal Entry 15 by mady from Reading, Berkshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, September 08, 2004
I've quite liked this one!! Much more than I expected, even though it's not a typical book from Tracy Chevalier (at least from what I've read from her). All the women in the story touched me, so I wasn't happy until I finished this one quite late (or should I say early? ;D) last night. And I have the feeling there's something autobiographical in this book. Thanks a lot to fflloorr and Scrawler for giving me the chance to read this one. It'll be back with fflloorr still today!

I enjoyed this, perhaps not as much as I expected to but am glad I had the opportunity to read it. The characters are very likable which draws the reader into the story eager to know what happens.
