I checked on goodreads to see what readers thought and was a trifle surprised to read -
"A horror novel from the author of Forbidden Garden and Lullaby. Set in the Caribbean, where reason struggles against voodoo threats and the dead become indistinguishable from the living."
Not sure whether it is my sort of book but as it is set in the Caribbean it can contribute to the 666 Challenge.
In the humid, sweltering heat of the Caribbean, something cold and deadly stirs. J.C. spends his school holidays at his mother's old family home, a lush tropical estate known as Cristobel. Something is wrong however, the Cane Cave which was once his favourite spot, now terrifies him.
There, too, is his brother August, his step-father Marcus Leyland and Marcus’s new young wife Justine. But something is wrong. Justine suffers from a strange distress, driven inexplicably to attempt suicide by jumping over the cliff one hot night. Marcus, usually aloof, fears for her sanity and turns to his psychiatrist brother Stephen for urgent help. Prominently throughout the house is Amalie, J.C.’s Haitian nurse rumoured to be a witch; and the strange presence of the ghostly woman in white.
Even though this is definitely not my usual sort of book I found it compelling reading. Curiosity kept me going. With no experience of voodoo or the mysteries of Caribbean behaviour I had to suspend belief in the normal and was anxious to see what happens next. This author, new to me, tells a good story and her descriptions give a steamy impression of the tropical vegetation.
