My brother's work discarded a box of manga and this was one of the included volumes.

--

When high school student Kagome is transported back in time to the feudal era, she accidentally releases the demon dog Inu-Yasha, imprisoned for stealing the magical "Jewel of Four Souls." Bound to each other by a powerful spell, they must now work together to reclaim the jewel to prevent other demons from using its power for evil!

I've enjoyed several volumes of the manga (starting with Volume 1), as well as the anime, so since the box has three volumes that I haven't read yet I'm claiming them happily! (This one's got Sesshoumaru on the cover - he's my favorite.)

Later: This volume opens with Sesshoumaru, Inu-Yasha's stoic, full-blood-demon older brother, trying to replace the arm that he lost to Inu-Yasha in their last confrontation. A transplanted demon arm isn't holding up very well, and while Sesshoumaru is more than capable of vanquishing armies with only one arm, he still seems to want a replacement. Cue Naraku, a mysterious creature who offers a human arm, plus a bonus item that should help Sesshoumaru deal with his little brother once and for all.

Meanwhile, Inu-Yasha and the gang are settling down for the night in the ritziest house in the village, thanks to monk Miroku, who somehow always manages to detect some evil force that needs exorcising in the most comfortable available digs {wry grin}. But they aren't allowed any respite, as the newly re-armed Sesshoumaru shows up seeking to reclaim Inu-Yasha's sword...

The battle is quite exciting, and while I already knew how it was going to turn out, I enjoyed reading the details. And Sesshoumaru seems able to fend off Naraku's attempts to dominate him, something few others can do. But the dangers of the battle make Inu-Yasha - who's just coming to realize how much he cares for Kagome - send her back to her own time, reclaiming her jewel-shard and sealing the well so she can't return!

This volume also includes a recounting of the origins of Naraku, which will be important to future story-arcs. And by the end of this volume, little fox-spirit Shippo has gotten himself in serious danger while trying to find a way to help Kagome return to this time. Oh, the suspense; stay tuned for Volume 8!

[There's an extensive TV Tropes page on the series.]
