I've been reading some good historical fiction set during the time period covered in this book, and thought it'd make an interesting companion-read. (One example: The Moneylender of Toulouse, set in 1204, with events and locales - and a few songs! - that overlap with this book.)
Later: More entertaining than I'd expected, though I admit I did skim over some sections. The author's narrative style is rather charming, commenting on general views of the nasty-brutish-and-short eras as well as the more enlightened ones, with lots of detail on the personalities of the individuals cited. There were plenty of political, social, and religious ups and downs, as frivolous songs went in and out of favor, and there are many examples of poems and songs ranging from satirical to ecstatic to delightfully earthy.
