hmmmm.... I had high hopes for this book. I'd been meaning to read it for awhile but I just couldn't get to it. Now that I had a bookbox perfect for it, it was pushed to the top!

I was disappointed though. I have several good Japanese cookbooks, so I was particularly interested in the recipes to try. I was hoping for a decent book, interspersed with recipes here and there.

Instead I found a book that was childish and self centered. It sounded like it was written by the exact type it was written by, a 20 something still mostly focused on themselves and believing themselves to be the center of all.

She wrote from a young persons inexperienced perspective that doesn't take into account people and lives from all walks of life. You could tell she's never had an real hardships yet, to have empathy to shape her opinions. She spoke with an authority and a station of privilege that were just good luck in where and to whom she was born to. This is not her fault, per say, but it is annoying.

I imagine in 15 years, she'll be able to re-read this and cringe with realization but that's then. As for me, I shortly started yawning and skimming the book. I could jump pages and still tell you what she most likely was carrying on about. It was basically the same 3 thoughts, repeated over and over.

No thank you. :P

Hopefully, this will find a reader that will be more patient and forgiving.

Read this a few years back, shortly after the French Women don't get Fat book. This one is obviously riding on the French book's wave of popularity, and try to one-up it with "don't get fat or old." Smart for the author to be the first to hop on and profit from the fad! She may not win any literary prize but at least she made a nice buck.

There's obviously some healthy aspect of Japanese cuisine that is worth sharing, though what a Japanese person eats usually is very different from what you can find at a Japanese restaurant. The truth is, we all grow up used to food in our culture, and it's hard to switch to food of a different culture, long term, it just doesn't provide that level of comfort and nostalgia as food your mom made for you. But the basis of eating a simpler fare, smaller portion, less red meat and more veggies, is healthful for anyone.
