One of those books I think everyone should read.

From the back of the book:

"COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED

'We should treat all the trivial things of life seriously and all the serious things of life with sincere and studied triviality'

This is how Oscar Wilde described the philosophy of The Importance of Being Earnest, his most sparkling, witty and light-hearted play of aristrocratic manners and high society.

To avoid family duties, Algernon Moncrieff, a bachelor-about-town, has invented Bunburym a sick relative who frequently calls him away. His friend Jack Worthing has invented a wicked brother called Ernest to disguise his own misdemeanours. When Algernon poses as Ernest, confusion takes hold and it takes the discovery of an old black handbag before Jack and Algernon can discover the truth behind the deceit.

In a brilliant exposé of social follies, Oscar Wilde has written the most delightful, timeless comedy of them all.

Witty, funny and quotable. I've seen the 2002 film version of "The Importance of Being Earnest", but I would love to see this play on the stage someday.

Followed me home from a BC meeting. I was looking at this already in a previous meeting, but back then I didn't take this because I have the play in an anthology. This time I first didn't realize that, and when I was reminded of it I decided, what the heck, I'll never read it if I don't take the BC book. Now I have to read it!

My plan worked perfectly, this slim edition was a lot more attractive to read than the one in the Arnold Anthology tome.

The dialogue was entertaining and the language quite witty, but my overall impression is "well, pretty OK". I've never been really fond of Wilde's oh-so-intelligent cynicism. Luckily it's balanced with self-irony.

Took this one with me from July BC meeting in Tampere. I have not read Wilde before so I'm filling an educational gap here :-)

EDIT: The book was kind of charming. And at the end all was sorted out so nicely...maybe too nicely... but then again that might be the idea.

I found the book from a nice idyllic café "Runo" ("Poem" in English). Could take a while before I have time to read it but I'm looking forward to it.

Wow, this was reserved for me. Thank you Hunnamus and Margih that you remembered I wanted this! This play of Wilde has been on my mind "for ages". Surprised how thin it is.

What a charming play! Such a clever dialogue and happy ending made this very enjoyable to read at once. Must see on stage some day.
