Where'd You Go, Bernadette
14 journalers for this copy...
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle--and people in general--has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.
To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence--creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter's role in an absurd world.

This was an enjoyable read. I liked the format of it, a sort of epistolary novel, the story consists mostly of e-mails/letters between different characters, and sometimes told by Bee herself. Some bits were quite funny and it's very readable.
The ending was a little strange, but it kind of made me want to visit Antarctica too :P (And I guess Bernadette didn't do what she planned to?)

Skimming some of the reviews on goodreads (I never read them before starting a book), I am impressed by how much some people enjoyed this. After a quick skim at least one, if not more people considered this one of the best books they'd ever read. Hmmm. Can't say I'd go that far.
I enjoyed this, especially once I finally got into it, but I can't say it was one of the best ever etc.
The shifting perspectives and allegiances were interesting, but the letter format kept things a bit too distanced for quite a while, in my opinion. Gradually I got more caught up in it and enjoyed it more. On the whole an interesting read - thanks so much for making it available. I've PMed for the next address.

I quite like the style in which the book is written.
But at the beginning I thought the character of Bernadette kind of
depressing.. not much fun and happiness there.. why didn't she once stand up
against the accusations thrown at her?!
Later in the book it got better and I wanted to find out what happened.
besides that I was always having that song in my mind: "Where did you go to my lovely" (Peter Sarstedt) - just because of the title *lol*

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Like others, I enjoyed this but kind of didn't think it lived up to the hype.
it's a fun, funny little story; the characters keep the dark themes fro being too dull, and the variety of first person perspectives makes for an interesting (if not exactly original) way of story-telling; I like this method since you get to put together the overall story from these pieces - you can see things from different perspectives which lends it's to dramatic irony and ensuring humour.
So yes, an enjoyable enough light read, but, well, it's not really anything particularly special, if I'm honest.
In the post on it's way to the next reader

All done! I found the book very slow to start; it did not grab me as much as I thought. However, I did like the way it was written and the last two chapters were my favourite chapters. I liked the way Semple wrote from different people's perspectives. It was a clever way of explaining the story.

This evening we were driving from Bedfordshire to Warwickshire as part of a weekend away - and stopped off at the fascinating Towcester Mill Brewery, Northants for a quick drink en route, as the Go Hunting pages had alerted me to its active Official BookCrossing Zone!
This is one of the two books I picked up from the shelves, chosen for I don't know what reason except that I can't resist BookCrossing stickers and didn't want to come away without a couple of souvenirs ....
It's only now that I can see what a long and interesting history it has!
Greetings, all!
