1984

Still haven't read this classic...
I received this in the mail today... but I'm not quite sure who to thank, so I'll say thanks to both Deerskin and Guinneth! :)
Last time I read this was way back in high school (pre-1984, in fact!), so I'm looking forward to reading it again, as an adult this time.

Very interesting, and rather depressing, read! I remember most of it from when I read it back in high school, but I can't imagine what I ever would have taken from it then... I wasn't the most politically aware child of the 80s, to say the least!
I suppose the age-old question is, could 1984 happen? I think the entire situation of 1984 is pretty far-fetched, but certain aspects of the 1984 society could happen and do exist today. One I'm thinking of in particular is the "powers that be" keeping people in a constant state of war. Also, sometimes when I hear the news, I wonder how far away we are from the principles of doublethink and Newspeak!
Anyway, I very much appreciate the chance to have read this book again... thanks! :)
I'll be passing it on to a fellow BookCrosser (nanaloo).

I'll be bringing this to our meetup at Teas 'n' Beans tonight to pass on to nanaloo.
Oh dear... I got this book back from nanaloo at the last BookCrossing meet (September 22, 2005), and totally forgot to journal it! I am so sorry... but so you know, it's back in my hands now, and ready to be released. :)
I'll be taking this book to our monthly BookCrossing meet tonight - if no one claims it, I'll bring it back home and release it another time.
EDIT: No takers, so it's still in my hands!

I picked this book up. I've read it before, but I'll read it again.

It appears as though I still truly like 1984. Yes, in the first bit, when all that is reminisced or complained about is food, it seemed too much of a 'boo-hoo, poor me' story. There are people starving everywhere. But then it gets into the lack of freedoms and corruption, etc. and I remembered that this is the same wonderful book I read before. In fact, it is all the better, for noting that that is what people are going to whine about and remember whining about, when they were little and brutish children. Bravo, Blair. Yes, and there's a neat bio on the first page about the author, "George Orwell".
