This book was thoroughly intruiging and at the same time utterly unbearable. It was like trying to see something in a dark place, something that is there, can be vaguely guessed, but not entirely made out. Every step closer helps diminish the blurriness and helps reveal what is waiting there, right in front of you. And although you have a bad feeling, you move forward, try to make sense of what you see, finally manage to put the pieces together and then somehow wish you could unsee it entirely.
This step-by-step approach manages to pull the reader into the maelstrom of this remarkably cruel tale. Its brutality so subtle at times, it only haunts the mind later - in retrospective of the unfolding events. And while there are a lot of things that bring unease and terror, for me the most disturbing revelation had to do with the cursive l.
The beauty and density of the language sets a stark contrast to the lightness of the narrator's voice. It was something else entirely. I have to say this is a great and likewise unnerving book.
I came across this book in a bookring and it followed me for quite a while after having finished it. I hope it has something to offer for you!

What a pleasant surprise! I was participating in the bookray (which is not progressing very fast), and now I have an opportunity to read it early. Also, the book is a light-weighed paperback, very easy to pass. Thanks!
What a book. I was ready to call it quits after a dozens of pages. Not everyone can bear such vivid images of the "mortal remains".
My interest picked in the second part, when the story began to take shape. Unreliable narrator is a great way of telling stories, I finished one with the somewhat similar twist not long ago.
Anyway, it was hard for me to read the book despite its small size. The language used is really weird. First I blamed the translation, but maybe I just have little or no familiarity whatsoever with the religious texts in English to see the connection.
I could imagine how this book might make a lingering impression and I'm curious to see what others think of it.

I totally agree with Andrasthe's review. The book made quite an impression on me as well (enough to get me out of a two month long reader's block, so I guess that says it all). Yes, strong images. I finished the last 30-something pages last night on the train, and I have to say there were times where I had to put the book down and get a grip on myself.

I'm sorry to say I didn't like this book -at all. I suppose I understand why it made an impression to other readers, but it didn't work for me and I missed the point completely.

Arrived today. Shouldn't take too long to read and it looks like it might have a moral.
I'm with Merolia on this one, it's just too weird for me and the language is so difficult but I don't think that's because of the translation. I didn't like this book at all and fail to understand why it made such an impression on others. I also missed the point completely.

Thanks for this - looks interesting and arrived yesterday. As I'm in the middle of moving / decorating my reading has slowed of late... I still have half of my current book, Lamilla's book and a bookray ahead of this... School breaks up on fri though which should mean I can catch up. I'll try not to stall it too long!

As I said previously, I took the book in French from my local library.
I don't know how it can be translated because it's written in an old and odd French/Quebec language mixed with very modern one.
It's a piece of art. Every word or sentence has a meaning and you have to get a clue. Some are just for fun.
There are many references to a lot of works. I'm not so clever so I read a bit of studies about this book.
The author died of an heart-attack just one year ago.

I think this is one of the most bizarre and macabre books I have ever read! At first I found the style impossible and was about to give up, but like Lamilla it then started to intrigue me... I can't say I enjoyed it, but I'm glad I've read it... I was a bit disappointed by the ending though - what kept me reading was I really wanted to see how the outside world came crashing in... A very unusual book. I also liked some of the black humour in the narrator's style (like muskrat/musket etc).

I think I'm with sarahmangan on this one. Bizarre and intriguing, but ultimately a bit disappointing. The weird use of language at times felt contrived and created too much of a distance between the reader and the story. But I'm glad to have had the opportunity to read it and that makes it a good choice for the roundabout. Thanks for sharing, Andrasthe!

Strange book. I'm not even sure I got the point of the story.
