Thank you for sharing this wonderful book. It impressed me very much, for the quality of the drawings and for the emotion put into each panel. I think it characterizes a big city in a very exact way.

Frans Masereel (* 30. Juli 1889 in Blankenberge; † 3. Januar 1972 in Avignon) war ein bedeutender belgischer Grafiker, Zeichner und Maler, der vor allem für seine beeindruckenden, von starken Emotionen geprägten Holzschnitte bekannt ist.
Masereel vertrat in seiner Kunst einen konsequenten Humanismus. Er stellte die Menschen in ihrer Verlorenheit und Verlassenheit in der modernen Zivilisation dar, ohne indessen als Pessimist gelten zu können. Denn gleichzeitig lieferte er Beispiele für Handlungsmöglichkeiten, um dem Menschlichen in einer sich entmenschlichenden Welt den ihm gebührenden Platz zu sichern. Beispiele hierfür sind die 80 Holzschnitte „Das Gesicht Hamburgs“ oder die 100 Holzschnitte des Zyklus „Die Stadt“ (1925). 1919 erschien seine Folge von 167 Holzschnitten „Mein Stundenbuch“, die in Deutschland 1920 von Kurt Wolff verlegt wurde.

Edit: I liked Frans Masereel's woodcuts very much and hope I'll be able to see some of his works in an exhibition at some point. Thank you very much for sharing "La Ciudad", I would never have discovered the artist by myself.

La ciudad、スペイン語で「都市」というタイトルがついたマンガ。この都市のどこかで繰り広げられる風景を１ページずつ切り取ったもの全てにストーリーを感じました。大衆、貧富の差、孤独、殺人など暗いイメージのページが多くある中で、喜び、華やかさ、慈愛のページを見つけた時に倍増する幸福感！白黒で版画の作品が見せたいものの内面を倍増させているような感じを受けました。また言葉がない所からイメージを膨らませ受取るものの多い事！楽しい時間を過ごせました。ありがとう。

I received a parcel from Japan, which was so nice I left it unopened for a day on my desk. It contains this book and all kinds of BC-goodies, Japanese bookmarks and three other booklets in Spanish and other lovely things. Bookcrossing is so much fun sometimes!
I looked at the drawings on three mornings in the sun on my roofterrace. There is so much happening on every single drawing! You really get a sence of the city in the 20's, from the rich and famous dancing to the poor thing watching in the street. See how filthy the city is.

Es un libro precioso, que no contiene palabras, sólo imágenes en blanco y negro. Ellas son las protagonistas, son potentes y hablan por sí mismas, pues no se echa de menos el texto. Ambientada en una ciudad industrial cualquiera del momento (1925), nos muestra escenas de la vida cotidiana y otras no tan cotidianas. La masificación, las fábricas, el humo, las calles, los lugares de trabajo, escenas de amor y de muerte, de violencia, de día y de noche, de ocio… Todo se encuentra enmarcado en un tono de denuncia contra las desigualdades sociales, vemos la clase pudiente con sus diversiones y la clase obrera con sus miserias, y muchos otros secretos que se esconden en cada página. Cada ilustración nos cuenta una historia llena de múltiples detalles. Una pequeña obra de arte para disfrutar de su “visionado” una y otra vez.
Sigue su viaje, se va con CoriZamora. ¡Buenas lecturas!
