How would you feel if you saw a photo of yourself in a newspaper ad for what appears to be a chat room when you knew you had nothing to do with it? And if you then saw another photo which you recognised as a woman murdered? It is very difficult to persuade police that cases are connected when the circumstances and methods are different. The further I read into this the more I realised how much we leave ourselves open to people. We post things on facebook, we walk the same route every day ("available Monday to Friday") and at the same time, we try for the same car in the train, the same area in the car, we wear the same coat and anyone wanting to follow us could.
This was scary and it didn't need the police officer to tell someone something she shouldn't to make the fragility of our security clear.
I was fascinated, frightened, and amused by turns as I tried to figure out who was behind the whole thing. It didn't help that every once in a while we got a note from the guilty party which just twisted the thinking again. The ending was perfectly logical and I felt I should have guessed it, but it was actually a shock.
I read about this book in a Goodreads review and spotted it on the shelf at the store. Glad I bought it.
Not a book to read at night when you're alone.

Zoe Walker hasn't had it too easy, but life seems to looking up for her. Her kids seem to be turning out okay, her new boyfriend is loving and supportive, her neighbour is always there to lend a helping hand and even her ex-husband, is always willing to pitch in. Things might not be perfect, but she's doing okay, until she notices her own photo in an ad for Findtheone.com in a local newspaper. There is no functional website, and the phone number is non-existent, but this does not make Zoe feel any better about what she is very sure is her own face in the paper.
The pacing is good and keeps the reader interest. A few quibbles; when Zoe finally figures out who is behind this; her antagonist refers to her as a whiney complainer, and I have to say, they're right. However the reason that they have a dispute with Zoe, is utterly ridiculous and plays into rotten cliches. (I wish I knew how to hide part of review for spoilers, as I could go on about this). Zoe wasn't easy to like, with her whining and her spoiling, helicopter parenting.
That said, when the final chapter is reached and the reader finds out the partner in crime, it's pretty great and frightening.

The premise of this book was original, I thought, and carried the book for me. A woman who commutes on London's Underground sees a photo of her own face being used to advertise a dating site. When she looks further into it, she discovers a different face is featured each day, and that some of the women have been murdered. Thought the ending was a little over the top, and unrealistic, but the story was interesting enough to keep me involved until the end. Really glad I don't have to ride the Underground to work -- it sounds awful.
