Everything you ever wanted to know about SPAM, and quite possibly more!
This was a trip down memory lane; SPAM had its heyday when I was a kid. I remember thinking it was OK, neither loving nor hating it. Fortunately, my mom didn't serve it too often!
Though this book is a bit dated (published in 1999), a quick google search indicates that not much seems to have changed since its publication - especially since it's basically a history of the meat since its invention in 1937, with other trivia in the many sidebars and inserts. An interesting mix!
I had no idea SPAM had such a culture built up around it, from festivals to songs, haiku, and some very creative recipes (Lobster Thermidor aux Crevettes with a Mornay Sauce Garnished with Truffle Paté, Brandy and a Fried Egg on Top and SPAM anyone?). And who can forget Monty Python's famous skit?
This was a fun read!

Added to the Biographies of Things Bookbox. Hope it finds a new reader soon!
I'm leaving this in the Biographies of Things bookbox, but I did sneak the chance to read it while I was making my other selections. It's quite entertaining, and with some interesting tidbits here and there - and I admit it prompted me to pick up a can of Spam at the supermarket today, with an eye towards a nostalgic little dinner {grin}.
You know, I've never really liked Spam. My mom didn't buy it a lot when I was a kid---I think it grossed my Dad out. That, or he just ate too much of it when HE was a kid! Anyway, my daughter pointed out the Spam last night when we were in Walmart with a "subtle" hint to buy some. I didn't---but I might do a funny homeschool lesson after reading this where I feed them Spam and do a history lesson. Our homeschool is pretty much 20% book learning and 80% weird, random, cultural things that are truly fun to learn! Ha! Besides, I want them to be excellent Trivial Pursuit players! Tangent over...anyway, I'm looking forward to the book! Ha!
