I came across this handsome pocket-sized hardcover at Savers, and decided to pick it up for release.
I first read the book some years ago, and while I found many of its scenes memorable - most notably the horrifying tragedy of Charles Bovary's attempt to repair a lad's club foot - I have to admit that it's not among my favorite classic novels, mainly because I didn't like Emma Bovary at all! Oh, I can manage some sympathy for her, of course, but she had so little in the way of inner resources that I found her rather alien, and since she could have made her own life so much happier had she only exercised a wee bit of sense... But then she wouldn't have been Emma, and the story wouldn't have been the same. But reading it just makes me impatient to shake her hard and tell her what to do!
There have been quite a few screen adaptations of the novel, with varying degrees of success, including the 1949 version starring Jennifer Jones and the 1991 version starring Isabelle Huppert.
The TV Tropes page for the novel has some interesting tidbits, but do beware of spoilers if you haven't read the book yet.
