I picked this hard-cover up at a fabulous price from B&N (thanks for the gift card, Sam!) because I read and enjoyed The Alienist by the same author.

Well, it's readable. Have you seen The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Very similar in concept (though not in setting) in my opinion, without the terribly dumb plot twist in "LXG" — though I really hate shortened movie titles like that. Like, why was Independence Day so widely shortened to ID4? The "4" from "July 4" appended to the "I" and "D" from the movie's title just seemed stupid to me. When you get the end of this book, ask yourself this question: how did they know??? And therein lies my biggest beef with this book.

Give me a friggin' break, Carr. This was a HUGE disappointment after 'The Alienist.' It's actually semi-interesting most of the way through and it ties up into a neat, completely illogical bow at the end. I don't recommend this for anyone over age 13.
