A very moving story set during the second world war, when thousands of Japanese Americans were interred in camps. It spoke to the conflict between the Chinese communities and the Japanese community. The story was also a love story and one of conflicting loyalties.

I have read other literature on the internment of Japanese-Canadians and Canadians of Japanese descent during WWII, however I had never before read any on the treatment of those of Japanese descent in the USA during the same time period. This was a well written story which I think did a pretty good job in capturing the time period and some of the issues and feelings which occurred back then.
It was interesting how the story unfolded by jumping back and forth in time from WWII when the main character was a child and to his present day as a senior. The characterizations were well done and heartfelt - they weren't perfect, but you could understand them and the complexities of their lives and decisions.
