I'm going to keep this short and try not to gush over or cry during my review of this book.

As an avid reader - one of those people who connect better to fictional characters than real people - Stephen King is like an old friend. Or a benevolent dealer. Or both. He feels like a member of the family - maybe the kind of older brother who chases you around with a spider until you cry, but then lets you have half his candy bar when you do. I stopped at about a third of the way in, gazed off into the distance and sent a 'shine' to Mr. King. It was simply,

(thank you)

with well-wishes and affectionate feelings attached. I'd like to think he received it in the same way Danny Torrance would have.

I have loved King's twisted mind for years and am grateful to have shared in the waves - sometimes tsunamis - of brilliance (The Shining and The Stand, to name just two) that have originated from it. We're both growing older (although he got his start sooner). With age comes an erosion to youth's cocky confidence. What we gain in wisdom as we experience more of life often makes us more humble. Experience often teaches us that what we thought we knew in our twenties isn't actually concrete. We're fallible. Life is uncertain. Our Magic 8 Ball doesn't answer as confidently as it once did. Reply hazy, try again.

We feel this aging wisdom and uncertainty in King's grown up Dan Torrance. And in King's Author's Note at the end of the novel, you can hear him questioning himself and his decision to reprise that character. That broke my heart a little and made me love him even more. May you have long days and pleasant nights, too, Mr. King, sir. Brother. Friend. Your story was more than okay by me.

Oh, were you expecting a review of the story? Nah. I'll leave that to others. There will be plenty - some good and glowing, some bad and full of venom. Mine I've reserved for nostalgic sniveling and hero-worshiping. Get your details elsewhere, but go knowing I highly recommend the novel and believe it is pure King brilliance from start to finish.
