High school all-American Neely Crenshaw was probably the best quarterback ever to play for the legendary Messina Spartans. Fifteen years have gone by since those glory days, and Neely has come home to Messina to bury Coach Eddie Rake, the man who molded the Spartans into an unbeatable football dynasty.

Now, as Coach Rake's "boys" sit in the bleachers waiting for the dimming field lights to signal his passing, they replay the old games, relive the old glories, and try to decide once and for all whether they love Eddie Rake -- or hate him. For Neely Crenshaw, a man who must finally forgive his coach -- and himself -- before he can get on with his life, the stakes are especially high.

To be read.

Overall, I wasn't that impressed with this little story by Grisham. There's one section where they are listening to a radio broadcast of a football game and I had a hard time with that section because despite being fairly football-literate (for a girl, anyway), I still don't get all the terminology, especially when plays are described. Also, there is a VERY extraneous character and a very extraneous scene... SPOILER - highlight blank space to see text - What is UP with Cameron? She's SO pointless. I was reading the scene where she and Neely are on the front porch and I was thinking, "What clueless wannabe author wrote this scene?" To me, JG took one of his stock characters (conflicted, recently divorced man) and just turned him into a former football hero. He needed more conflict than just the Rake/Neely conflict, so he added Cameron. And the whole Rake thing... that didn't strike me as such a huge deal after all. He built it up like it was something huge, but it wound up being nothing.

Anyway, I was totally unimpressed with this book. I thought I would like it because of the whole southern football thing, but eh... I could have done without it. Thank goodness it was short. Oh and John, go back to writing legal thrillers. It's what you do best.
