From the back cover: History and fiction merge seamlessly in Tracy Chevalier's luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Through the eyes of sixteen-year-old Griet, the world of 1660s Holland comes dazzlingly alive in this richly imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer's most celebrated paintings.

It was very interesting to compare this book with Girl in Hyacinth Blue - both about the fictional story behind a Vermeer painting. For me, this book was far superior to the other. I loved the story and it kept me reading. It also just seemed much more complete than the other book.

Finished this book last night. Thoroughly enjoyed it. A lot of the details coincided with details about Vermeer from Girl in Hyacinth Blue which I read about a year ago. Since these are 2 different authors I assume that Chevalier used a lot of true facts about Vermeer in her work of fiction. I found myself often turning to the cover of the book which has a copy of the painting Girl with a Pearl Earring, looking into the eyes of the main character, imagining her life.
