Amazon Editorial Review

"This novel may be brief, but it leaves a big impact."
-Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Tom's a normal seventh-grader, negotiating a slightly prickly stage in his long friendship with Jeff...The arrival of new girl Jessica Feeney, however, changes everything; Jessica, who is attending a local hospital for treatment, has been badly burned by a fire, and her terrible disfigurement shocks the class into confusion. This isn't the usual book about adjustment to difference; instead, Abbott brilliantly explores the kids' struggle to manage the intrusion of abnormality in their lives...this is a thoughtful exploration of a brief interlude's lasting impact."
-The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Thanks very much for this hardback book which is in great condition. What fun to be the decoy in the Halloween competition.

This book is aimed at pre-teens and was a thoughtful look at changing ideas and acceptance. I thought it was very realistic, as it follows the thoughts of a boy when a new student who has been burnt joins his class.

I would recommend this book.

A quick and enjoyable read, and touching as well however I felt the story would have been much stronger if more time was spent on Jessica, and less on the minor social interactions of Tom. I felt like to large of a chunk of the story was going on and on about his jerk of a friend, when that time should have been devoted to Jessica. She seemed like a static character, you empathized with her for sure but I felt something was lacking in making her truly well rounded. Shame the book wasn't a bit longer and the ending so abrupt.

Glad to have read it however, and will find it a new home ASAP. :)
