This is the sixth, (and also the last - the author passed away in 2007), D.I. Frost mystery. Frost is a rumpled, chain-smoking, booze-guzzling, profane detective on the Denton, (England), police force - and bears more than a passing resemblance to Superintendant Andrew Dalziel of Reginald Hill's series - although Andy is a tad more cerebral. The Frost books are non-stop express rides with our protagonist missing meals and sleep while chasing the loose ends of a half-dozen capers - all the while avoiding his superiors and paperwork.
This book fits that mold with Frost "investigating" the disappearance of three local teens, a blackmail scheme targeting a local supermarket chain and an international child pornography ring simultaneously - while dodging a new boss who is attempting to have him transferred. No Sherlock Holmes puzzles with well thought out deductions here but still an enjoyable read..
