A charming tale about the effect the San Salvatore Castle has on four very different englishwomen, each of whom has their own reasons for escaping a cold dull English April for the Italian Riviera...
Lotty Wilkins is nervous and talkative & treated like a child by her husband & is starting to resent him;
Rose Arbuthnot has a "face like a disappointed madonna," & is pious, sweet,
but desperately unhappy;
Margaret Fisher is stern & demanding but living in the past, a past peppered with famous literary encounters;
And Caroline Dester, the beautiful "Scrap", popular but lonely & bored with her whirlwind social life.
But San Salvatore works it magic & almost immediately the women begin to change...
Lotty loses her nervous demeanor & becomes more confident;
Rose blossoms & wants wins back the love of her formerly indifferent husband;
Margaret finally begins to smile & relax & starts living in the present instead of the dusty past;
And Caroline re-opens her heart to love and friendship by recognizing the emptiness of her life before she left for Italy.
The story is atmospheric & beautifully written - I really felt for Mrs Wilkins when Mrs Fisher seemed to be taking over the "hosting" of the holiday!
This copy was picked up second-hand & has obviously been used by someone studying it , judging by the highlighted areas - can't help wondering what made those lines so special :o)
