Arsenal Pulp Press, Vancouver, B.C. 1997. Paperback, 217 pages.
Cover design and illustration by Kelly Brooks.

The blurb:
As Canadians, we remember the stories told to us in high school history class as condensed images of the past — the glorious Mountie, the fearsome Native, the monumental Last Spike. NATIONAL DREAMS is an incisive study of the most persistent icons and stories in Canadian history, and how they inform our sense of national identity. The book is the story of our stories; the myths and truths of our collective past that we first learned in school, and which we carry throughout our adult lives as tangible evidence of the Canadian experience. From the CPR to the RCMP, from the Ideology of the Canoe to the Infantilization of Quebec, author Daniel Francis investigates aspects of the national mythology, in which history is as much storytelling as fact.

About the author:
DANIEL FRANCIS is a historian and the author/editor of thirteen previous books, including The Imaginary Indian: The Image of the Indian in Canadian Culture and Imagining Ourselves: Classics of Canadian Non-Fiction, both published by Arsenal Pulp Press. His other books include Copying People: Photographing British Columbia First Nations 1860—1940, The Great Chase: A History of World Whaling, and New Beginnings: A Social History of Canada. He lives in North Vancouver, B.C.

Journal Entry 2 by Tarna at Tampere, Pirkanmaa / Birkaland Finland on Thursday, October 3, 2013
Bought this book at Chapters in Thunder Bay, Ont. in 1998. And I've read it quite a few times. Lots of underlinings there, I'm afraid, and perhaps even some notes in the margins.
I've been interested in Canadian national identity a long, long time. It is very interesting subject, especially since some researchers have said that it doesn't even exist. A Canadian poll conducted in the 90's, I think, concluded that three most important elements in Canadian national identity were national healthcare, peacekeeping, and ice hockey. Sounds pretty odd to a Finn. Who would ever suggest that Finnish national identity consists of, for instance, sauna (shouldn't need a translation, I think) , pesäpallo (Finnish national game, our own version of baseball) and mobile phones (outdated, I know, because Nokia will soon be gone), or something else like that. But then again, I'm not Canadian.
Anyway, Daniel Francis gives us his view on Canadian national identity. And I find it both interesting and worth reading.
