As with other Sarah Water's work, the writing in Affinity is excellent. The descriptive passages describe conditions in the Victorian prison so well; I could visualise the dank, thick, stone walls which housed the prisoners and could feel the dampness of the air hanging over the Thames.

Following the death of her father, Margaret Prior has decided to pursue some 'good work' with the lady criminals of one of London’s most notorious gaols. Surrounded by prisoners, murderers and common thieves, Margaret feels herself drawn to the imprisoned spiritualist Selina Dawes. She feels sympathy for this innocent-seeming girl and tries to alleviate some of the loneliness and hardships of prison life by giving her friendship and guidance. But as the friendship and trust develops she finds she Is drown into a strange world of séances, and unruly spirits.

I found the book a little slow to start–you knew the relationship between these two women was to become the crux of the story–but it was slow to build. However the suspense builds towards the end and what comes is a total unexpected twist. Wow. (It kept me up till 3.30am reading – there was no way I would have been able to sleep if I had stopped sooner.)
