I love Alice Hoffman's books, with their quirky characters, hints of the supernatural & they are always beautifully written & presented. I have to say though this is probably my least favourite simply due to the fact that I didn't like Allie or Maddy...Paul either for that matter, all of whom featured in the first part of the book.
As ever, the characters are all linked - both through family ties & through their contact with a haunted hotel. To learn their stories we work backwards, hearing first of Allie impending marriage to the doomed Paul in the 1990's before moving to the 1960's where Paul's mother Frieda is working as a chamber maid & befriends a singer. In Lucy's tale (1950s) the reason for the haunting becomes apparent. In honesty, I didn't find Frieda & Lucy particularly engaging either.
Overall, well-written as usual but I was disappointed that I didn't like it as much as I expected.
