Synopsis (Credit: Back cover)

A pilot forced to land in the Sahara meets a little prince. The wise and enchanting stories the prince tells of his own planet with its three volcanoes and a haughty flower are unforgettable.

A strange and wonderful parable for all ages, with superb illustrations by the author.

Translated from French by Katherine Woods.

On the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die List.

(Bought second-hand at the Central Library, Drill Hall, Cape Town.)

I read this book many years ago. It is a thin classic that has crossed paths with so many readers and remains popular.

When the time came to release this particular copy, I couldn't resist reading it once again. I always find it interesting how different parts of a book appeal to me compared to when I first read it. What struck me this time was the following passage. When the fox has to part ways with the little prince, he tells him a secret.

"It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose ..."

BookCrosser stubee is planning to get married in August. He and his fiancée came up with the idea to leave copies of BC books on the tables at their reception. He posted a list of their favourite books in one of the forums and got a huge response. The Little Prince was one of the books on the list and I offered to send them this copy.

My wish accompanying this book on its journey is twofold:

• that it will be picked up and enjoyed by an enthusiastic future BookCrosser at the wedding reception; and

• that the newly-wed couple will take heed of the fox's advice -- realise how important it is to see with the heart rather than the eye, understand that they are responsible for each other now that they have tamed each other, and that they'll 'waste' lots of time for and with each other in the years to come.
