Some books you know from the opening page that you are just going to love them & for me this was one of those books - I loved it!
This tale is told by Ruby Lennox starting from her conception (the opening sentence is "I exist!")& immediately you're drawn into Ruby's world. I particulary liked this first chapter as told by Ruby from her mother's womb...I haven't read anything like that before!
Each chapter in Ruby's life is followed by a footnote that links the chapter to events in the family history & in this way we learn all about the family from Alice, Ruby's great-grandmother to the ups & downs of her parents marriage. It's wonderfully written, funny, witty, charming, you can hear the the young Ruby telling her tale.
I found the book quite quirky. Here's a quote that tickled me...
..Bunty thought of Sandy Havis choking to death on the oily sea water in the Atlantic, trying desperately to swim for his life then rolling down - over & over - into a lost watery grave.
What did you think of when you were drowning? (Nothing in Sandy's case because he was hit on the head by a crate of spam as he fell into the water.)
...well, it made me smile :o)
A really entertaining read about a young girls life in 1950's York - highly recommended.
