Who better to make a comment about this book than Peter Høeg?
"The laconic voice of Inspector Kari Vaara is at the same time dangerous and human, his world cold, barren, yet intriguingly exotic, his story fast, brutal, yet told with a sort of laid back calm."
Vaara is new to me and I love Scandinavian tales so couldn't resist ordering a copy from The Book Depository.

I've read this now with enjoyment but with a certain amount of sorrow at the bleakness of the location so near the Arctic Circle. The descriptions of the intense cold almost interfere with reading enjoyment. There was a depressed feeling about the semi-permanent darkness and the cruelty described so starkly was a trifle off-putting.Thompson comes up with a deep and sinister scenario although hedescribes the characters well.
I'll try another book by this author if I can but with reservations.

“Years ago, when I was working on my master's thesis, I went to New York for a semester as an exchange student. What struck me most was the sky. On that side of the world, so far away from the North Pole, the sky is flat and gray, a one-dimensional universe. Here, the sky is arched, and there's almost no pollution. In spring and fall the sky is dark blue or violet, and sunsets last for hours. The sun turns into a dim orange ball that transforms clouds into silver-rimmed red and violet towers. In winter, twenty-four hours a day, uncountable stars outline the vaulted ceiling of the great cathedral we live in. Finnish skies are the reason I believe in God.”

Read for the 666 challenge. What a vivid portrayal of a bleak country and its bleak people. A graphic and grisly murder scene not for the faint hearted.
I wonder if a Finnish author would portray their society and their fellow citizens characters so bleakly.

Please note new order.
Surprise surprise a murder mystery book that has originated from Sherlockfan. More reading more fun and many thanks to Edwardstreet for restarting the stalled ray.
This was one bleak book and just reading it made you feel cold. What got me in about this one was the setting and the author did it so well with cold and dark of a northern Finnish winter. Throw in some unpleasant murders and this became a must for fans of this genre. Have set outside for the Alphabetical VBB
The book has safely arrived in the UK. I chose this because I have read Scandinavian crime novels before but never one set in Finland. Thank you Billbooks for getting this to me so quickly.
A chilling read set in a starkly atmospheric setting that really drew me in. I read this in two sessions.

This arrived in my mailbox in July! What, Christmas already?! Thanks so much, Plum-crazy, for organizing this RABCK draw. And for picking my name out of the proverbial hat, lol!
Very graphic depictions of horrendous murders, paired with a bleak setting and despairing people. Not my favourite type of murder mystery. Depressing and grotesque. Certainly doesn't make you want to visit Finland!
