I had my doubts when I purchased the three prequels to Dune - after all, Fran Herbert had created a massive, multi-faceted, intriocate universe in whic lots of seemingly unconnected people, things and plots hang together. The books were a pleasant surprise, picking up loose stands and adding genuine background and plot - hard to put down.
