Book Description

Police chief of a small Massachusetts town, Cameron McDonald makes the toughest arrest of his life when his own cousin Jamie comes to him and confesses outright that he has killed his terminally ill wife out of mercy.

Now, a heated murder trial plunges the town into upheaval, and drives a wedge into a contented marriage: Cameron, aiding the prosecution in their case against Jamie, is suddenly at odds with his devoted wife, Allie -- seduced by the idea of a man so in love with his wife that he'd grant all her wishes, even her wish to end her life. And when an inexplicable attraction leads to a shocking betrayal, Allie faces the hardest questions of the heart: when does love cross the line of moral obligation? And what does it mean to truly love another?

Praised for her "personal, detail-rich style" (Glamour), Jodi Picoult infuses this page-turning novel with heart, warmth, and startling candor, taking readers on an unforgettable emotional journey.

Released on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Seferim's Miscellaneous Bookbox in Bookbox, postal release USA.

Taken from Seferim's Misc. bookbox. Love Jodi Picoult books. Thanks.

I enjoyed this book. This was out of my ususal genre. Interesting, convulted characters with many dimensions. Though the plotline involved euthanasia, it really was about the sacrifices everyone makes for those they love and how far are you willing to go, even in your everyday life.

A very good read.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am so excited to have this book. I LOVE this author and just finished "The Pact" by Jodi Picoult. I think her writing is so real as far as the issues that the characters face.

Journal Entry 7 by BigBird2002 from Mesa, Arizona USA on Wednesday, July 14, 2004
Well, I have to admit that I did not finish this book. I have heard a lot of people say that Jodi Picoult is either hit or miss for them, and I can understand why. The books of hers that I have read really grabbed me. This one just did not do it for me. I have started a book ray with this book by request.

Arrived in today's mail. Looking forward to reading this one as I've enjoyed other books by Jodi Picoult.

Journal Entry 12 by narfinmagic from Freehold, New Jersey USA on Saturday, September 25, 2004
Like the other book by Jodi Picoult that I've read, I really enjoyed reading this one. It was not my favorite story by her, but certainly had a lot of merits. She has a beautiful writing style with well developed characters. You could feel the love that Jamie felt for his wife and I empathized with the anguish he must have went through making the decision to end her life; thereby ending her pain and suffering. The trial kept me wondering until the end. The subplot involving Cam, Allie and Mia was also well written but not as interesting a part of the book for me. I had a lot more trouble relating to this plot, but liked the growth Allie showed as the book developed.

This book is going out in today's mail to oldreader. Thank you BigBird2002 for sharing this book with us. Hope everyone else enjoys it.

This arrived in today's mail. I have some other bookrings ahead of it but will read as quickly as I can. Please check my profile to see where I am in my reading list as well as an expected finish date for this book. I've read one other book by Jodi Picoult and I really enjoyed it, so I'm looking forward to reading this!

I will update this journal entry when I start reading this book.

UPDATE 10/28 - I started reading this book this morning. I hope to finish it over the weekend. With that in mind, I'm going to go ahead and PM the next person in line in hopes of mailing this out early next week with the other packages I've got waiting.

Journal Entry 17 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Tuesday, November 2, 2004
Well, I tried - really I did. But I just couldn't finish this. It just didn't grab me at all. I'm disappointed, too, as I enjoyed the one other book of hers I've read ("Second Glance"). Perhaps it just wasn't the right time for me, but I finally gave up on this last night. I'll be mailing it out to the next person in line tomorrow.

Thanks for the opportunity to check this book out!

UPDATE 10/3 - Sent media mail to batty14.

Journal Entry 18 by batty14 from Schuylerville, New York USA on Monday, November 8, 2004
rec'd in the mail today as part of bookring. At the top of my pile.

Journal Entry 19 by batty14 from Schuylerville, New York USA on Sunday, November 28, 2004
I really like this author, but I am glad I didn't read other book entries because I may have stopped reading this one. Not as good as many of her other books... Keeping Faith is her best in MHO... the book was slow to start, but did pick up a bit once you made it to the middle. Although it seemed to end suddenly. I would have liked one more chapter.

pm'ed bookgal23 and will have it ready to mail to her early this week.

Journal Entry 22 by CharmedKim from Secaucus, New Jersey USA on Friday, December 31, 2004
Although I like Jodi Picoult's style of writing and her characters, I just couldn't finish the book. The subject matter was too intense for me at this time.

Sent today to grace4truth.

Jodi Picoult never lets me down! I loved this book. She really makes you think when you read her books. What would I do if this were my situation? Allie and Jamie were two amazing characters, and the decisions they had to make are ones I hope to never have to deal with! Sorry I held the book sooo long. Thanks so much for sharing!!! I have pmed mamikaem and am awaiting an address, and the book will be moving again soon.

Journal Entry 28 by Mamikaem from Maryland Heights, Missouri USA on Tuesday, September 6, 2005
Received this in the mail today. THANKS! Since I'm the last on the list of this ray, I will either send it on another ray or offer it up as a RABCK.

UPDATE: 09/26/2005 - started this last night.

10/02/2005 - I'm over halfway done with this book. It's good but it's difficult for me to read as I see a great many similarities between my own marriage and that of Cam & Allie's. Also Allie's naivete (at least at this point in the book) is really frustrating! However I can't seem to put the book down!

Received "Mercy" from Mamikaem in its continuing bookray journey. Thank you! I am looking forward to reading this.

Journal Entry 31 by FeralReader from Davis, California USA on Saturday, October 29, 2005
This is the second novel by Jodi Picoult that I've read. In her recent book, My Sister's Keeper, I enjoyed her crisp prose and obvious compassion for her (imperfect) characters. She invites the reader to look past a sensational news story and to understand its underlying humanity, and she coveys powerful emotions in an understated and convincing manner. In Mercy (1996), Picoult is still developing this skill, learning to make all those difficult decisions over what to keep, what to cut, what requires explanation and what does not. I did not so much enjoy the story as I enjoyed experiencing the writer at her work. I did not like any of the characters, but I found it interesting to observe how she crafted them. The plot was burdened by unecessary (and sometimes implausible) details that diverted the reader's energy, and for me, that was occasionally tiresome. Nevertheless, I was caught up in the story by the middle of the book and had a hard time putting it down until I finished the last chapter. Picoult is skilled at creating suspense and anticipation, and in this book, the reader is rewarded with plenty of both toward the end. I'm glad that Jodi Picoult has continued to develop her excellent storytelling skills and fine writing. I'll gladly keep reading!

Thank you, Mamikaem, for initiating this stage of the book ray.

Off to the post office, and on its way to Snowy652!

Note on the book itself:
This copy of "Mercy" has a well-traveled character, with worn-down edges and a bit of water damage, some light stains. However, the binding and covers are holding well, and I think it will last through several more readers if handled with some extra care. I considered replacing it with a new copy but I don't think it's ready for retirement, just yet. Instead, I will make this offer: If this book falls apart while still on the current book ray, please PM me and I will find and donate a replacement copy to complete its journey.

Journal Entry 32 by snowy652 from Abbotsford, British Columbia Canada on Thursday, November 10, 2005
opened this one up today -- thank you for sending it my way. I have a few to read before it -- it has been showering rays and rings where I dwell -- I will get to reading this as soon as I can -- I will comment once read and then pass it on to a new reader.

Nov 23/05 ~ ~ Finished this one tonite. I have enjoyed all of Picoult's books thus far and this one can be added to the list. At first the story seemed to drag and I had to plow through but by the middle of the book I was hooked. I was glad to have had the opportunity to read yet another of Picoult's writings and I look forward to more from her.

**will send to morsecode as soon as I have an address

Journal Entry 35 by morsecode from Woonsocket, Rhode Island USA on Saturday, December 10, 2005
I've read a couple of Jodi Picoult's books (Plain Truth and Keeping Faith). I enjoy her choice of subject matter, the interesting treatment of her subjects, and the depth of her characters. This one isn't my favorite, but it was still quite good.
Because my husband and I are both at least part Scottish, I enjoyed the Scottish clan subtheme.

I'll be sending this off to Lauraloo29 on Monday.

Journal Entry 36 by morsecode from Woonsocket, Rhode Island USA on Wednesday, December 14, 2005
The post office is an absolute zoo this time of year so I am not even going to try to send this out until the week after Christmas.
I'm going to PM lauraloo to let her know.

Journal Entry 38 by winglauraloo29wing from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Thursday, January 19, 2006
I am struggling with this book. I'm relieved to see I'm not the only one. It's my third Jodi Picoult book (I very much enjoyed the others). I can't seem to connect with any of the characters. If I didn't have a pile of bookrings I might have tried pushing through it, but I can't get behind. :)

It will go out to the next person next week. Thank you for the opportunity of reading the book.

Journal Entry 39 by wolfprincess from Newton Falls, Ohio USA on Wednesday, February 1, 2006
the book arrived today. I will start it as soon as I get the other two rings I have in front of it.

Journal Entry 40 by wolfprincess from Newton Falls, Ohio USA on Saturday, February 11, 2006
I enjoyed the book. I tried to read one of Jodi's books just a little bit ago and I just could not get intrested in it and I was wondering if the same thing was going to happen with this book. I am glad that I was able to enjoy this book and actually finish it compared to the other book I read of hers. I am still not sure what everyone sees in her writting though because I did have some issues with the book as well but not like the other one I read. I am going to get the book out by the end of the coming week as soon as I get Sapphirefarey22's address

Journal Entry 43 by Firegirl from Tucson, Arizona USA on Thursday, July 13, 2006
Arrived safely. Will get started on it straight away.

Journal Entry 44 by Firegirl from Tucson, Arizona USA on Wednesday, July 26, 2006
This is the third Picoult book I've read and, while not my favorite, I did enjoy it. I was a little distracted by some of the stranger details (the Bonsai trees bursting free, for example) and I could definitely tell this isn't one of her most recent books; the writing isn't as fluid as it has since become, though it was still a relatively quick read. The interesting, though-provoking story line is definitley there along with richly developed, unique characters who grow and change in the course of the story. That is what I read Picoult for and I why I enjoy her. As in the other two books of hers I read, I didn't like the ending. No spoilers, but I didn't think it turned out the way it would have in real life. I've come to accept that I'll usually be disappointed in the way her stories end, but that won't stop me from reading more of them.

Thank for including me in this ray! I'm PMed the next in line and will send it out as soon as I've got an address.
