Scotland Street witnesses the wedding of the century of Angus Lordie to Domenica Macdonald, but as the newlyweds depart on honeymoon Edinburgh is in disarray. Recovering from the trauma of being best man, Matthew is taken up by a Dane called Bo, while Cyril eludes his dog-sitter and embarks on an odyssey involving fox-holes and the official residence of a cardinal. Narcissist Bruce meets his match in the form of a sinister doppelganger; Bertie, set up by his mother for fresh embarrassment at school, yearns for freedom; and Big Lou goes viral. But the residents of Scotland Street rally, and order - and Cyril - is restored by the combined effects of understanding, kindness, and, most of all, friendship.

The wedding was good but there wasn't much happening in this book.
Going to kirjakko. Enjoy :)

Thanks! It's been raining for days - I guess autumn is here - so a bit of sunshine is welcome!

Next to be read as I'm sending this over to Releanna as a delayed birthday present (at my age I have to make more than mental notes).

As always with a book which jugs my memory I have to start commenting early on. I loved the idea of house plaques mentioning also those who shared the famous person's life there, like the three wives of Compton Mackenzie (seriatim). I wondered why he sounded so familiar and McCall Smith very kindly told that he wrote Whisky Galore! which I got three weeks ago from a Birmingham meet-up (I must be getting old, I missed a day at Cruft's to meet local bookcrossers - and had a great time). I haven't read the book yet, but the first few pages were promising.

Cyril has not yet been to see the shrink, but the shrink has told Irene he knows a fair bit about dog psychotherapics and all the big names in the the field. Like Roger Mugford. Well, I've met Mr Mugford, famous for his soft methods, when he was marketing Citronella anti-barking collars at a veterinary nursing congress and was surrounded by myriads of young nurses. "Here is an unsatisfied client from Finland" I said from the back row and he replied immidiately "Try pepper" and tossed me a re-fill bottle. It was first when the crowd had dissappeared that he came over and asked what breed of dog I had. "An Icelandic sheepdog." His face went crimson: "Shoot the dog!" he said like he meant it. He said that the two breeds the collar is no use to are Icelandic sheepdog and Norwegian buhund. He told that he had been invited to lecture in Iceland and they mentioned that many of those dogs are problem barkers. He went there like The Savior with a planeful of Citronella collars and the bloody dogs just ignored them and barked their heads off. Mugford had to flee the country with his tail tucked between his legs.
Barbara Woodhouse is a legend of her time. I think she has introduced the word "walkies" into British language. She has written books and had a long-running TV-show about dog-training The Woodhouse Way. When she died there was this cartoon in the newspaper where unhappy dogs on a cloud talked to each other: "We had so much fun here, rolled in mud, chewed shoes... and then SHE came up!"
Can't wait to read the part where Cyril actually meets the shrink.

A Stirling Castle place mat takes me years back when I used to interrail in Britain. I always stayed at Youth Hostels and there was one in Stirling Castle. I definately wanted to stay the night in Stirling and sleep in a real CASTLE!! How romantic! Castles are always somewhere up the hill and this was no objection to the rule. My rucksack was heavier the higher we got and it was not surprising to see that opposite to the Castle was a cematery for all those who could not make it.

Finished! I was waiting for a totally different storyline following Jonathan's and Bruce's little identity exchange. Perhaps it is to be continued in a book to come? The book didn't have an ending where all loose bits and pieces would have been connected or some conclusion over matters made, so there is sure to be yet another book (I've lost track ages ago of how many there are and have not read these in any particular order). I find these entertaining and well-written, if you don't wait anything BIG or SPECTACULAR to happen.
Although Irene SO irritates me and I can hardly wait for Bertie's 18th birthday...
