Did you know that banana skins, laid just below the surface of the soil, have long been said to be beneficial for roses, and that horticulturists now approve the practice? Or that mulching strawberries with pine needles will improve their flavor? Or that hollyhocks thrive on beer? Maureen and Bridget Boland have been collecting garden wisdom for many years, both from "old wives" and from books ancient and modern. In this charming little volume, they pass on the best of their store of useful and curious information.

Though not a gardener, I enjoyed these little tidbits of information and especially the authors' sense of humor.

Thanks so much! The book looks charming and funny, a good combination!

Later: Lots of fun here, with some interesting garden lore, occasional useful hints and tips, and many chuckles - I really enjoyed the authors' tone. Their discovery of the value of burying fat next to rosebushes really intrigued me - and I laughed aloud when they described that this method didn't work as well in the country, where the foxes promptly dug up the fat. And I made a note of one suggestion: to lay an old bicycle-tire inner-tube near the catmint, so that neighborhood cats will think it's a snake and keep their distance. [I don't know if that would work, though; some of my cats actively hunted snakes, with great delight; I may stick to my own technique, placing a wire mesh container over the catmint so that the cats can only nibble on the shoots that grow through the mesh.]

There are some delightfully gruesome anecdotes in among the more benign ones, and an overall chatty-and-sometimes-snarky tone that I really enjoyed!
