Jeanette is a bright and rebellious orphan who is adopted into an evangelical household in the dour, industrial North of England and finds herself embroidering grim religious mottoes and shaking her little tambourine for Jesus. But as this budding missionary comes of age, and comes to terms with her unorthodox sexuality, the peculiar balance of her God-fearing household dissolves. Jeanette's insistence on listening to the truths of her own heart and mind - and on reporting them with wit and passion - makes for an unforgettable chronicle of an eccentric, moving passage into adulthood.

I also wasn't expecting to like this book at all. But I enjoyed the first half of the book. I thought it was humourous and insightful - the young narrator was a delight. However, the second half was a little too phiolosophical and seemed to waffle a bit.

And I felt the only characters we really got to know were the narrator and her mother. I would have liked more on the other characters like Elsie and Melanie.

This will now be travelling to LESEHEST who was the winner of my TBR-ABCK competition.

I got this book from LESEHEST at the bookcrossing meeting today, thanks a lot! :) I have heard quite a lot about this book from other bookcrossers, so I'm curious about reading it.

(by the way, this was in fact one of the books I actually intended to take with me home from the meeting... I ended up with plenty more, hehe).

I just finished Oranges, and I really enjoyed this book!
The story is funny in parts, though quite sad, and it must have been very hard growing up in a family like that. Interesting and insightful, in my opinion.
I liked Winterson's writing style and the intertwined stories, and I'm looking forward to read more of her books.

Findabair was interested in reading this book after me, so it will be given to her once I get the chance to do so.

I started reading this book some time ago, but it didn't really catch my interest at the time, so I put it aside for another day. Instead of letting it gather dust in my own bookshelf however, I'll be giving it to the LGBT film festival project (Skeive Filmer BCZ), in the hopes of someone finding it who might enjoy it more.

LeishaCamden's taken the liberty of reading this while it's been in her possession. June 19th through 23rd.

Not sure what I can add to what the others have already written - I agree with RockDg9 almost to the letter. First part of the book was the best, then it kinda slipped off into ... not sure what to call it, but too stream-of-consciousness-y for my taste. I found it kind of difficult to keep track of the story ... the style's too vague, which I'm sure appeals to many, but it's not my thing.

Most of the characters were also pretty vague. There were a number of characters that I really missed some background info on. The book was a quick and easy read - only about 170 pages - I felt she could have afforded to spend a few more pages on background. :-)

This was not my kind of book and I don't think I'll be reading anything more by this author ... but it was certainly interesting to try this. Not a bad book, just not my cup of tea. But it did have the attraction of being #237 on the list of 1001 books you must read before you die ... ;-)
