I'm so excited to read this! I was really happy when I found out J.K had written another book. I totally understand her reasons for doing it under a different name.
I would NOT have brought this book if I had not found out that it was written by J.K.Rowling. The only reason being is that it's a crime novel. I do not, as a rule, buy crime novels, with the exception of millennium trilogy. It's not that I don't like crime novels, I read all the ones given to me and enjoy most of them but I just don't consider them worthy enough to spend my money on. So I'm really glad J.K decided to own up to writing this. Because if a books got J.K Rowling splashed across the cover then I am buying that book!
I loved it. I think it's one of the best crime novels I have ever read. Well worth the money I paid for it. Much better than 'The Casual Vacancy'. The plot is fantastic. I've been trying to work out who killed Lula Landry for the past couple of days. I didn't guess right, I didn't have a clue. Either I'm a rubbish detective or J.K is a bloody good writer, properly a bit of both.
And the characters are likeable! I think this was her biggest mistake with 'The Casual Vacancy', there was no one to really get behind. But this is not the case here. The main character, Cormoran Strike is the sort of man you can't help but like. Gruff on the outside but soft underneath. And the secondary character, Robin was great. She and Strike had good working chemistry. All the "suspects" were an interesting bunch with different flaws that made you enjoy it when they were being interrogated.
Overall I'm so glad I read this, not just for the J.K factor but because it was brilliant. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Thank you so much for the tag, very generous too as I hadn’t realised it was hardback
11 Jan 21 - I’ve initially came across Cormaron Strike in the TV series, and although it says in the credits it's on the book, I don’t think it registered at the time. With the newest series shown last year I was telling my other half how much I enjoyed them and he agreed to start at the beginning before the new series began, thankfully he also enjoyed them and we binge watched the lot.
Now if you are looking for a full on thriller with a cliffhanger at the end of every chapter, then this might not be for you. But what I found in this was a complex crime, and despite seeing the TV show twice, I still couldn’t remember who did it! I like the way you can already see a nice relationship developing between Strike and Robin, they come across as working well together. Maybe it was a bit on the long side and a bit repetitive at times, but I found it a very enjoyable read and am looking forward to the next. I also have to say that the TV series actually got it pretty spot on too.
