Lisa, Bright and Dark
5 journalers for this copy...
I read this quite a while ago and I don't remember too many specifics. I do remember liking it though and, being about the same age as the protagonist, really getting into it. Maybe if I reread it I'll write more, as it is, here's the back of the book:
"Daddy, I think I'm going crazy," Lisa said.
Mr. Shilling said, "You've seen too many movies." And Mrs. Shilling went on, "I think it's very rude of you to discuss this sort of thing when we have guests."
What do you do when you are 16 years old and know you are losing your mind...and your parents think you are faking? John Neufel, whose novel "Edgar Allan" was called 'a work of art' by The New York Times, turns his deft touch and understanding spirit to the story of Lisa Shilling and three teen-age friends who walk with her where adults fear to tread.

Got this in the mail yesterday. Can't wait to read it, though I've got a few ahead of it.
I work in a mental health center, and I enjoy reading books about the subject. I liked this book for several reasons. First, it was published in 1970 and I can see big changes in the field of mental illness. There is a lot more knowledge, and treatment and detection are better. Second, I liked that the book was told through the eyes of Lisa's friends. It wasn't what I expected, but it was interesting. Third, I learned a lot from the way her parents refused to see what was happening to her. So, overall I enjoyed the book. I'll be mailing this book to Karenzero on Friday 5/27.
Will read ASAP!
An interesting, quick read. It was definitely interesting to see how perceptions toward mental illness, especially that of young people, has changed.
I will send this off soon.
Thanks for sharing the book!!

Wow- I don't remember signing up for this book. Actually, I don't think I did. I think Zarylia just added me- can't remember if she told me or not, though. Ah well, Thanks Mags for including me in a bit of a surprise ring. It's a nice little book that I hope to get through soon. And thank you KarenZero for sending it to me.
I finished this Friday in the midst of a big heat wave that left me completely unable to do anything but read. It was a very simply written story meant, I think, to spread awareness about mental illness in a time when it wasn't understood very well and most conditions went undiagnosed, as Lisa's threatened to be. She was a very lucky girl to have the friends that she had, ones that cared enough to listen and were observant enough to notice.
Back to Zarylia tomorrow . . .

Paynesville/MN/USA - My book is back and in fabulous shape; I'm very impressed. :-D I just wanted to thank everyone for participating. Now that the book is home it just seems wrong for it so sit on my shelf so I'll probably release it. If anyone has any other ideas about what I should do with it I'm open to suggestions. Thanks again everyone! :-D
