The Hand That First Held Mine
5 journalers for this copy...
The story progresses in two different timelines. It tells the story of Lexie Sinclair, a young English woman who falls in love with magazine editor Innes Kent, after escaping from her stifling family to London in the 1950s. The other timeline, set in the present day, deals with Elina, a Finnish-Swedish painter who had a near-fatal Caesarian section and gives birth to the son of film editor Ted. The theme of the novel is motherhood and how it changes one's perception of the world.

I took this home with me from the meet-up. It'll probably be a while before I get around to reading this.

A bit of a slow read, but enjoyable and touching. What bothered me, though, was the incorrect use of Finnish language. If you're going to use a foreign language in your book, have a native proofread it, for crying out loud.

Maggie O`Farrel is a quite new acquaintance to me, never read anything else from her.
She proved to be an excellent storyteller! Although this story was a bit too predictable I enjoyed every moment with it. And I will certainly read her other books too!
This book is reserved for Lukutuoli.

EDIT 200717
I finally read the Finnish translation of this book (Käsi jota kerran pitelin), loved the touching story and the description of the strong women characters, although you couldn't like all of them :) I absolutely want to read more books by O'Farrell!

The book is here, thank you very much!
I haven't heard anything of Maggie O`Farrel or this novel before but it sure sounds interesting. I would like to start reading it right now but, of course, I've already got couple of books that I've started to read...

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I remember I started reading this book years ago but never finished it. It might be that it was close to the time when I was on maternity leave myself and I only remember there was something really disturbing(?) in this book and I didn't feel comfortable reading it further.
